I just picked up my pack of these from the local store. I think that they said they received either 6 or 8 of them to give away, 1 per box of Shards (as Gryfalia mentioned at his store too) What do these go for? I'm torn between opening it and playing with them, and just saving or selling the sealed...

I think you are reading to much into it. The height adjustment is a quite normal variant that I have seen both within sets and across sets. Its been a while, but I seem to remember finding that the fastest way to separate 4th edition cards from 5th edition cards was by the height of the bottom text...
