1. Are you less interested in collecting lately? If so, why?
No, it does come and go as life goes up and down, but there's far too much out there for me to ever stop enjoying the challenge.

2. Are any of you MORE interested in collecting lately? If so, why?
Yes, Lorwyn rescued my tribe and gave me a serious headache of cards to track down, though foils are really the part that makes global sets so challenging... curse you Wotc :) Mostly, I just love looking at cards ..old junk commons, my merfs, current extended decks. I start jonesing to play whenever I look at cards.

3. Is there another site out there that you are haunting in favor of this one?
I like reading the current deckbuilding threads sometimes on wotc's site, pro tour recaps etc...the game even with new mechanics is still fresh to me as I haven't stayed obsessed with it the entire time since Alpha, I take breaks for a while here and there.

4. Do you think that any players that pick up the game now (in 2007) set a goal of collecting every set?
It's such a huge investment, I can't imagine anyone would do that unless their love for the game goes way back, and most people who are that have been around a long time and seen the game grow. Then again, there are always a lot of people who used to own cards and sold them, but still appreciate the game. Those guys could get the collector bug and re-enter the arena, you never know. Look at Kevin Smith having to go and buy his comic book collection back once eh started making movies. I think the hobby, the collecting part of it, not just the gameplay, will live a long time, much like comics.

5. If not, what do you think 'collecting' magic will mean in the future?
As a lot of others said above, I think most collecting is those already in the hobby continuing on, and then all the specialist collectors like flatmatt and his bears, chuck and his stone rains and the rest of you with your shivans, your skeletons, your huddled masses, misprints, artist collections etc.

'the fish guy'
Collecting Merfolk and Lords of Atlantis, 1 of each, every language, misprints, etc.

1. Are you less interested in collecting lately? If so, why?
Nope.

2. Are any of you MORE interested in collecting lately? If so, why?
Yep. I am including the last couple of years in "lately." I have more disposable income right now and can afford to buy the kinds of things I would have had to trade up for in the past. In turn in looking for those cards I discover other cool things to buy.

3. Is there another site out there that you are haunting in favor of this one?
No. I get basically all of my Magic info from this site, Starcitygames's Type 1 results, and magicthegathering.com, all for different reasons.

4. Do you think that any players that pick up the game now (in 2007) set a goal of collecting every set?
I doubt it, but then again I haven't met more than a couple new Magic players in the last... I don't know how many years. Almost every Magic player I've met since the late 90's had been playing for at least a couple of years.

5. If not, what do you think 'collecting' magic will mean in the future?
I think it will mean the same things it means now:
a. Collecting rare powerful cards. I include both old power, and new stuff like foil Japanese fetchlands in here. This is for people at the Starcitygames pimp thread.
b. Collecting weird things. This site is more or less devoted to that. I think it'll continue just because stuff like bizarre miscuts and Summer cards gain automatic coolness through the admiration of long-time players and the sheer rarity.
c. Collecting by theme. You can't really make a good site devoted to this, but there are plenty of threads here requesting help on that (ps. I've started a side project to do Nicol Bolas).
There are other categories (like set-building or just getting old unplayable cards) but I don't think they're as big. How the balance will evolve between the three above is hard to say. I think I'd put them in the order I listed, and I don't think it's coincidence that they're ordered in decreasing size of peer community. I tend to do all of them, mostly because despite living in a decent-sized city it's tough to find cool people to play with for fun. If I were playing Magic more, I think I wouldn't be as spread out in my collecting.
