New Game by Richard Garfield

Post by BillBo » Mon Oct 23, 2017 5:22 am

In case it slipped your attention, a German gaming company is crowdsourcing a new game by Richard Garfield:

Doesn't look too bad IMHO.

The project failed to draw sufficient funds. It's dead.

Postage to Australia was 70 Euro for a 45 Euro game, I have given quite a few European made games a miss because of this in the past.

But it had a good designer and good artists, shame to see it get cancelled.

It did look pretty complicated and although I looked for some gameplay examples I couldn't find anything to tell me how the game played. The theme looked interesting though.

Intersting they just gave up though nearly 25% of the goal reached and I only heard about it a couple of days ago, you would have thought they would have let it run longer just for the free advertising and then relaunched if they had to.

I don't have the inside scoop on this, but I agree. Now I've spent the budget on Terraforming Mars …

Saving my money for whatever Cool Mini or Not brings out next.

Sucker for Zombicide and even bought Massive Darkness so I could play the miniatures in Zombicide.

Never actually get time to paint or play them though.

I LOVE Zombicide!!! It is about the only thing we play outside of Magic now. :-D

Take it easy,

Well, as it turns out, it's not dead. See for two updates below. - Bernd

Hey folks,

long time without any news, but now we have something to write about.

We just launched this press release via our regular channels and I want to share the news with you as well.

tl,dr: We will release in 2019.

Long story below:

Dietzenbach, October 16th 2018: Carnival of Monsters, the youngest of Richard Garfield’s games, is scheduled to be published in fall 2019 as part of AMIGOs regular program.

Thus, the game publisher says goodbye to his 2017 launched Kickstarter campaign, through which the card illustrations should be funded by well-known artists of the trading card game Magic: The Gathering.

„We were convinced that a renewed association of Magic: The Gathering-designer Richard Garfield and illustrators from the early days of the trading card game would be exactly what the game needed and fans were waiting for,“ says Bernd Keller, editor of the game at AMIGO. „However, results of the campaign and fan feedback showed us that this was not the case …“

Due to this fact, AMIGO terminated the campaign prematurely in order to define a new approach. „Carnival of Monsters remains a project very close to our hearts. It deserves to get realized with extraordinary illustrations and we want to see it published even without Kickstarter support,“ says Alexander Jost, member of the AMIGO Management Board.

So, even if the project will not get realized identically to how it was originally planned, its illustrations are still going to be of the finest. The different „regions“, for example, will get illustrated by different artists. To this end, AMIGO is already planning ahead with new illustrators. These new artists may not be connected to the Magic: The Gathering universe, but their reputation as excellent game illustrators stands internationally.

Hey folks,

as promised, I would like to present our team of illustrators, now that we have the last slot filled.

Without further ado:

Dennis Lohausen - Region Aerie and Cover

Franz Vohwinkel - Region Caves

Martin Hoffmann - Region Darklands

Oliver Schlemmer - Region Depths

Claus Stephan - Region Dreamlands

Michael Menzel - Region Enchanted Forest

Loic Billiau - Staff

Maybe one or two names sound familiar to you. ;)

I hope you like our choices.

We will keep you posted with further information in the future.

Maybe with KeyForge getting all the hype, anything with Richard Garfields's name is getting the green light.

Just picked up Splendor, Camel Up, Dice Forge and Dixit so my board game needs are fixed until at least 2025.

Hi Mark, will check them out later—Xmas is approaching quickly ;-)—except for KeyForge which is 2-player. Cheers, Bernd

It's coming out and it's coming to GenCon:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1 ... red_users
Hey folks,

we have been silently working on the game in the background. It is however time for an update.

Carnival of Monsters will have its initial release this year at Gen Con. If everything goes according to plan, we will have it in our AMIGO US booth #2004 to check it out and should you be interested to buy it as well. The game is produced in Germany, so we will have to rely on our ship of choice and US customs, but all print files are delivered and approved, so fingers crossed.

This is how it will look like

That is however not all. Until the end of the year Carnival of Monsters will be available in the following countries in their respective languages: Australia, the Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Japan, Poland, Spain, the UK and of course Germany.

In the coming weeks I will post more information about the game. Most of all I will focus on the illustrations of the specific regions in play.

Please be aware, that I will post future updates on the BoardGameGeek page of Carnival of Monsters from now on. While I don't want to keep you guys out of the loop, the Kickstarter campaign did fail so it feel more appropriate to post there. It is also much easier to post and answer questions on BGG. I will however leave you a link here, whenever I post an update.

Thanks for staying with us and see you in Indy,
