Just added another 11 of these cards. (scans added on the first page)
Sadly in a desolating conditon.
Some are still glued on another card. I am trying to find a possability to remove them, good I know someone who repairs books as a profession, maybe she can help me.

please have a close look at the archeologist.
The card has a white bordered back and is the only of these cards having an Antiquities front.
Edit this is another testprint run.

Enjoy them
greetings from germany and nice xmas time
Richard

Couple points:

1. Nobody I've ever talked to at WotC and nothing I've read has indicated there were plans to change border color for Unlimited. This includes a very high up design person who would know this info. What is the source of this grey-borders-for-UL comment? By the way, the alternate color back for Arabian Nights was never produced, only conceptualized.

2. I wouldn't call these "test prints" so much as odd printings. Test prints are generally controlled experiments to investigate a new process (e.g., foil process). These are clearly not controlled and would not be used for decision making by designers.

3. The white border Argivian Archaeologist doesn't have any Black ink, therefore it is not a testprint of a white border. It is interesting to note that a testprint of a white border for a Magic back card has indeed been done (this card has black ink on the rest of the card back but not on the border).

Point 1:
Ralph once mentioned to me that Wotc thought of printing revised with greay borders. But they card shown on the back was and Unlimited card.
Thisway I thought they wanted to change the revised colors and used an unlimited print to test this.
I also know that the AN back was never produced.

Point 2:
How do you know, lets say the test print went ok and all thing need to be cleared where cleared.
Then the sheet was lying there in the corner and the machine has to be set up for the printing of AQ, why not use the sheet they have laying there in the corner?

Point 3:
That could be an explenation, as it realy has no black in the back at all.
My guess is that this cards comes from a sheet that should have been destroyed due to the black missing, thisone slipped through.
I have seen one of the cards you mentioned.
BB magic back on one side, WB back on the other side.

Thanks for your great input Forrest

inca911: It was indeed me who told pickle.69 that a grey border was tested as an alternative to the white border in the earliest days of Magic. I believe I had received this information from Dave Howell, former production manager of WotC and registered member of this forum named snarke. I may even have found the information on his website Magic - A Historical Perspective (a link can be found in the Links section) which is unfortunately offline at the moment. Maybe Dave will comment on this topic himself, otherwise I will contact him.

I know Dave from way back. If he's sure, that's good enough for me!

The BoP is on ebay at the moment.

Please do not ask for reserve and why I see it so high.
It is Ultra rare and Unique, therfor it has a certain Value in my eyes.
Hope you enjoy bidding and/or watching.

Hi guys,

I have done a little more research, and while I cannot find the article where I first read about the grey borders, I did find this very amusing articles;

Old story about how amazing MTG is

The email address at the bottom is hilarious!

D'Angelo Product List

Hopefully this helps... or at least amuses.

That would be really cool but it doesn't look like it. Looks more like a result of incomplete printing, ink being stripped off, dissolved by chemicals, etc. :| Still very nice.
