Summer Magic newbie

Post by entica » Tue Jul 26, 2005 4:07 am

Hi Everyone,

Awhile back I came into 63 sealed packs of what I believe are the fabled summer 1994. They've been stashed in my closet for years (other than some of them - read the horror story at the bottom of this post). However, I'm not sure how you really can tell they're the summer '94 packs? I've been scouring the 'net for any information regarding this but mostly all I can find are price lists for summer magic. Anyway, I've read that if the copyright date is 1994 then it's summer magic. Is this true? I mean, didn't they print several runs in 1994 besides summer? I guess the real way to tell is to open the packs and look for misprints? However, I'm wary of opening the sealed packs just yet. Any advice, suggestions, help, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Now for the horror story... I sold 32 of those packs on eBay a few years back as just regular revised sealed packs. I had no clue about the Summer '94 thing until today when by fluke I stumbled upon the information. Whomever got those cards sure is lucky (if they know what they have). I feel sick about it :( But at least I still have 31 sealed packs.

At the same time I also received an additional 600+ sealed packs of fallen empires and ice age which I presume are both next to worthless.

Thanks for any information!

Kevin.

as far as i know, there are no known ways of telling summer without opening the packs.

its true that several sets were printed during 94, but only "Summer" had copyright dates and no set symbol, so they would be pretty easy to spot.

If you know that all of the packs came from the same box/case, i would suggest opening 1 and seeing if they have the copyright date.. if they do, welcome to the land of the rich.. otherwise, meh. revised is still cool :p
Never argue with an Idiot, they will drag you down to their level then beat you with experience.

Summer packs look exactly like Revised packs. Open one, and if the cards are summer, the others are too.

Actually I don't agree with the above.

In the 1 out a million chance you actually have 31 sealed Summer packs (that's exactly like winning a lottery) I wouldn't even dare open one for the moment.

As we posted several times on these boards, you can quite easily "scan" the bottom of the first card through the sealed pack since the wrapping is quite transparent.

You can immediately recognize that 1994 date and check whether you're rich or not :P

Since Summer packs are identical to Revised packs from the outside, all Summer sealed packs have been scanned this way, so there's nothing strange about it.

Of course if the first card you see is Hurricane, Sol Ring, Demonic Tutor, Serra Angel or Hypnotic Spectre etc. (the first card is Uncommon) you might as well open the pack :)

An alternative method would be to ship the 31 packs to me so that I can check them for you and then send them back
[looks at his stack of perfectly normal Revised packs thoughtfully]

Just kidding !

im not sure why you think they are "the fabled summer magic". you didnt state what makes you think they arent just regular revised packs. wishful thinking? any normal person that had a question one way or the other would just open one pack and check. this whole post is ridiculous.

I totally agree,I've read enough of that type of "Santa Claus's Story"on another MTG Website
At,the First place,if 32 Boosters were sold on Ebay, and that it was Summer,we will have heard about it,and the buyers will have not let pass the 31 remaining.Except if the author of this post create a Tape showing Direct Live the opening of one of his Supposed "Summer"Booster in front of an Indepedent audience of "Summer" Specialists, for me this is one more "Guess what I found in my closet... bullshit" ;D

As it turns out they're not Summer magic (I opened a pack). Thanks everyone for your help and comments. The reason I did think they were summer magic was because on all the sites I could find Summer information, they said you could tell by looking at the copyright date. I thought they meant the copyright date on the packs. There was no clear indication that it was the cards specifically. Hence I came here to find out the straight goods on how to tell what Summer magic is.

And yes, the story of them being in my closet is true. I didn't "find" them there. I bought 700 sealed packs (mostly Fallen Empires) from a charity auction about 5 years ago. They've been sitting collecting dust ever since apart from the few attempts I made to sell the revised on eBay.

All that being said, I still do have about 600 sealed packs of Fallen Empires if anyone is interested :P Maybe use them to wallpaper your entire bedroom heh.

Dragsamou: your comments are completely rude and uncalled for. The reason you didn't hear about "32 boosters sold on eBay..." was because, as I explained, I didn't realize they were summer and never advertised them as such on eBay. The reason I posted here was exactly like you said - specialists. I needed a clear and helpful explination as how to really tell what Summer magic is. I appreciate the straight forward and helpful comments by all the other posters - thankyou!

600...six hundred...

boosters of FE?

I dunno, send me a PM with what you want for them, the worst I can say is no. Well, I can mock you, laugh at your offspring to the next 5 generations, but that's pretty unlikely. But seriously, if you really want to get rid of them, just drop me a line and I'll see if I'm as interested as you are!

Yeah roughly 600. It's been a few years since I counted them so I'll have to count them again to get an exact number. I'll post later once I have them counted up. I have no idea what they're worth. I was thinking of putting them all on ebay as one large auction and let people slog it out. I heard that fallen empires has no rares and no cards really worth any value. Too bad that entire box of 600+ sealed packs wasn't all revised :)

I found 600 fallen empires boxes under my bed yesterday. I opened a booster and found that lot of cards were odd: they all have a Wyvern back.
If someone is interested, just lmk.
