Japanese 5th Dawn Boosters

Post by Gryfalia » Thu Jul 22, 2004 11:52 pm

Ok, just got a box of these in the mail and my radar went off..

The outside of the box looks just fine.

But I opened it up and pulled out a booster.  Hmm, I said, the crimp is horizontal instead of vertical.  And there is a Peghook hole in it.  Does Hobby Japan make boosters designed to be put directly on peghooks?  And if they do, are the crimps on the Horizontal?  (which would make sense, as it would be less likely to rip out if force is applied on it).

I have opened one so far and the cards seem to look ok (including the foil in that pack), but I have no Japanese 5th dawn to compare it to..

Any ideas?

Ah, my bad, didn't see it.  I did a rip test (one less Asp in the world..darn) and it also did have the Black Line.

I couldn't imagine that fakes of this could be out so fast, but I wanted to check..

Actually, the WotC message about that some months ago specifically says 'blue or black, depending on set'..

I think it probably was blue, and became black.

Hey Gryf-

I was the original poster because of some Jap mirrodin packs I had - same deal.  I'm sure they were real.  Just freaky since we have just established that some fakes have horizontal crimps.

If you got those packs cheap, let me know where from!  I'm always looking for cheap non-english boxes!

Hmm, that is funny.  I just ripped a Thought Courier up and the "blue" layer was black.  Wonder when that started.  8th Edition? (Off to investigate!)

(1 Shimmering Wings, Aphetto Dredging, Spurred Wolverine, Misguided Rage, Dusk Imp, Fear, Dross Prowler, and Thought Courier later) Looks like it was indeed between Scourge and 8th Edition.  Though it's hard to tell between dark blue and black at the moment.

(1 Smokespew Invoker and 1 Goblin Brigand after that) I take it back.  Looks like it happened between Legions and Scourge.

check the boosters for me to see if there are any crimped cards in them.  This will be the only way to insure that the crimp is real...if the pack is unopened.  Plus, I liked the blue centers.  They should have consulted with me first.  >:(

Has anyone tried ripping up 1st through 10 series Minagishi boosters, and seeing if they had the same line through their cards?

All Japanese packs look like this since Legion or Carnage I think. I could check when I'm back home (currently invading London ...)

Carnage?  Do you mean Scourge, or is there some special Japanese set I missed?
