I noticed that the print quality in 1996 was very questionable.  Cards were very subjective to sunlight, heat, and other elements.  The card gloss seemed to degrade and not keep it's nice sheen and shift to a powdery opaque.  Color fade was very prevalent, like the black fading to brownish tinges.  I saw this in many Alliances cards at the time.  I would guess that all cards printed during that time period had the same effects.  If I had to guess you just save element damaged cards.  I learned this the hard way leaving a binder in my car back in 96 in the heat for many hours full of Alliances cards for trade.

Mike i have a stack 3 inches high and only the back borders thats hard to imagine that many cards just faded on the back borders and no where else on the cards.

Never seen that before.  Can you put up a scan?  I spose it's possible that they used a different ink for the border that was more easily faded by sun.

So, you are talking about the BACK of Japanese BB 4th being browner?  Wouldn't be surprised, but I will check tonight.

At one time I could tell you the expansion a card came from merely by looking at the back.  AQ was notorious for this..

This is not the only time a color difference has happened before.  I'd like to cite the case of 5Ed.  Look at a 5th Ed card's back compared to any other set.  You will notice that 5Ed is a deeper, darker black.  I new a guy that played in tournies and used 5Ed lands with clear backed sleeves.  Basically his deck was marked.  I called the judge on him and he got DQ'd.  Ironically this guy bought the store the tourney was at a couple years later and ran it into the ground.
