new!

Sometimes I check the forum and every thread in one or two of the top level categories is marked as 'new' even though they are not. Why does this happen?

A couple reasons for this, I have found.  Perhaps someone in the thread had gone back and edited their reply, which then creates a new.  Also, if a moderator moves a thread, it then becomes new in the new forum.

Right, but it's not just a single thread, it's every thread in a category.

This a known problem with the forum software itself.  I forget the exact reason, but i'll look it up.

Has this problem been solved? It does not occur on my PC.

Basically, its because YaBB stores a record of what threads each user has viewed, and only keeps said record for a certain period.  As pointed out in one of those links, on larger forums, with more thread movement, you don't notice it, and on smaller forums, you can set the number high without wasting much storage space.  I would point out that before the forum reorganization a few months, I did notice this - a new thread posted in trading or off topic would move off of the first page within a week or so (there are fewer posts weekly now, and they are spread over more categories).  If you paged through a category a month or so later, at some point, the older threads would start being marked unread.  However, since the threads were so far back, due to having been posted long ago, and not bumped or updated, they faded into obscurity, and no one noticed that they were marked unread.  Long story short, its not a flaw to be fixed, its a feature designed to conserve server space.

Note also that this happens regularly when posts are moved to a new category - sometimes it marks an entire category as unread.
