Hi Drycereal.
These come time to time on Ebay, there was a Big Post about that Poster in the Old Forum.
Re: oooo, looks rare
I just spoke with my co-worker who used to own 3 sets of the Beta uncut card sheets. He stated that the card sheets were given out for fellowship donations. He stated he is unaware of this poster set and believes that the seller's comments on the poster may be refering to uncut sheet information and not the posters. I have seen these posters on display before in stores twice. I also know that one of the stores they were in got them for free from WOTC. As a result I do not believe they were limited to a print run of 1000. Nor do I believe the history of what the seller is claiming on the posters. I think the current price of $25, which met the seller's reserve, is not unreasonable to ask for such an item though.
Re: oooo, looks rare
These posters were printing in Rochester, NY and were NOT authorized by WOTC. There were originally 1000 made, and about a third to a half of them were sent to WOTC or destroyed after WOTC started making legal threats. I have a set and can probably get others. I used to live in Rochester and am pretty close with the some of the people involved with making and selling these posters. I've seen them sell for between $30 - $75 for the set of 3. It is a scan of a complete alpha/beta set, some cards from each, and includes all the alpha variations/errors.
Re: oooo, looks rare
Thanks for the confirmation that the seller is misinformed on what he is selling. What purpose were the posters made for? Why were the posters sent to WOTC? Was is due to the legal threats, or was there intent to try to distribute them through proper channels?l0qii wrote:These posters were printing in Rochester, NY and were NOT authorized by WOTC. Re: oooo, looks rare
They were made for and by "The Charity Fellowship" which to the best of my knowledge had nothing to do with charity, and was just the name of the company (one guy really). If someone knows otherwise, please correct me? When WOTC found out about them they demanded either all remaining posters be surrended to them, or be destroyed and proof of their destruction be sent. They opted for the first. These were printed in 1994 or 95, I'm pretty sure 94.
Re: oooo, looks rare
My understanding of the history of these 3 sheets is pretty much the same as generally mentioned here. I first saw one in Michigan (when I lived in Toledo) and was on a run trying to find boxes of Legends anywhere (was a partial success, managed to score a couple). IIRC the store was outside Ann Arbor (south I think) near some large interstates.
Anyway, I’ve never heard anywhere that they were legit, and have heard quite a few times that they aren’t. (legit, in this case, meaning WoTC approved).
On the plus side, they look pretty sharp and make a cool poster for a gaming store..;-)

Another set -

Interesting, or annoying, that neither seems to come with the booklet that was originally included with the poster set.

Re: oooo, looks rare
Nobody I know who has these received, or has ever mentioned, a booklet.
Re: oooo, looks rare
I own a set of these posters, and mine came with the original booklet that was included.
It is more like a newletter and has a few articles talking about the cards and offering some amusing early strategy advice for each card in the original set. I have a picture of the cover here: http://www.geocities.com/motorcitymagic ... ooklet.jpg (you may need to copy and paste the URL manually)
Here are some threads from the old forum, with more info -

Re: oooo, looks rare
Heh, that's really cool. I've never seen one of those. I know a lot of those names though :)
I myself was a member of "RIT's largest student group RWAG" which btw is now second largest after the Anime Club. Crazy Egor's was the store that was selling them ,which is now called Millenium and under new ownership, Eric is the guy who owned the cards, and I could make guesses at some of the other names, but they're common and could be a few different people. Does that name in quotes say 'Tex' ?? If so I know that guy too :)

Re: oooo, looks rare
Hey MotorCity, I recognize that picture. I can vouch for the the booklet. Motorcity got the poster set from me (in fact that's my picture). The set even still had the original shrink wrap with the price tag (19.99 if I remember right). It was open on one end so you could get the posters in and out if you were careful.
Booklet was some interesting reading, a blast from the past you might say.
