Hi Guys,

I was buzzy to classify my Ice age basic land.
I'm front a really really strange feeling...

Got some 4th alter cards and I know how they are, but I have got in my hand 2 really really strange Ice age basic land plains who's seems to have the same quality back as the 4th alternate cards.
So back seems to be "more glossy" than usual etc....

But those 2 cards that I have in my hands got those 2 types of quality front side and back side !!!

One is stamped in gold 49 and the other no....

They don't seems to be fake cards but is it possible that they are testing cards or something like that ???

Never see that since I was born... a long time ago

Hi Eric

Won't be easy to help without HQ scans....But Glossy variations exists for a bunch of MTG Edition or Extensions like P3K, etc...49 in Gold, maybe a Tournament stamp.

Texture seems to be different... Cards seems to be as well slightly more thick... a little bit more glossy.

Possible that some Ice Age Starter deck has been made as well by the United States Playing car Corporation in place off Carta Mundi... same period as 4th Alter ...

Or Misprinted serie....

I think, it's just a known variation from Ice Age, at any rate will not boost the price of the card. To my knowledge, United States Playing cards corporation never was involved in Ice Age.

I got a "Touch of death" in my hand.

I have compare with tones of the same cards that I have in stock and and this card seems for the moment the more easy to "find" to "fall dawn" or recoignize....

General color of the card / Texture (More easy to see with the black cards) and the Black mana color is grey/Blue.
The general pic color behind the skeleton is more "shiny", copyright is more blue...

This does not look like a stamp at all. I would assume someone wrote "49" on the card with a golden sharpie.

It's not the same case in fact.

I'm buzzy to classify my Ice Age cards and found this famous plains glossy "stamped 49" and after some time this "Touch of Death" that's seems to be a better example as glossy type card quality

It could be the number '49'.

If you organize Ice Age alphabetically by colour, WUBRGcolorless, and include the basic lands within their respective colour, then the 3 Plains take up spots 47-49. The Plains pictured is v3 on magiccards.info, although it is the middle of the mural, so idk.

Color variations were all over the place in Ice Age. In addition, a common problem with any large print shop like Carta Mundi is that they can sometimes bring the wrong "wear coat" formulation to the printing press.

Almost all finish coats in the 80's and 90's were solvent-based (or VOC) solutions containing mixtures of acrylic and urethane resins. They could also contain components to control luster, plus stabilizers and sometimes traces of anti-bacterial or anti-fungal agents.

In the 90's Carta Mundi had a number of different wear coat formulations for their different products. On at least a few occasions they applied the wrong coating to Magic Cards. You could tell when the wear coat was off a bit by the mottled look on the back of an un-played card. I also saw this on some Fallen Empire and Homelands cards, but rarely on anything produced after those sets.

Your Ice Age cards, unlike the Alt-4th cards, will probably glow under UV light. This is because U. S. Playing card Company added a UV stabilizer, which Carta Mundi never did. (This is one reason why Cart Mundi's early cards were so easy to make fade in strong sunlight).

For the plains yes it is not a stamp it is writen in gold 49.

Strange as berkumps says that it is just the cards number classification...
