Well it is official Magic Librarians ... Scrye ... gone

Just saw rancored_elf talking on MTGSalvation ...

"I was passed this information today, which appears to be a mass email sent out to employees, artists, writers, and contributors of the magazine.

Dear Scrye Contributor: We at F+W Media continuously analyze our publishing strategy to determine if we are meeting our readers' needs and company goals. We take into consideration the marketplace we serve and the opportunities available for each of our magazine titles.

After much analysis and deliberation, we have determined to cease publication of Scrye magazine; the final issue will be the April 2009 edition, issue #131.

You may have specific questions about what has happened, and we have attempted to answer some general concerns below. If you have additional questions or concerns, feel free to e-mail me at joyce.greenholdt@fwmedia.com.

You have helped provide our readers with a consistent supply of information, instruction, and entertainment. On behalf of everyone at Scrye Magazine, I would like to thank you for your contributions to the magazine.

Best Regards,

Joyce Greenholdt, Editor
joyce.greenholdt@fwmedia.com

*GENERAL CONCERNS*

*Why are you ceasing publication of Scrye?*
With the escalating price of producing the magazine and declining subscriber and advertising bases, the future profitability of the magazine was questionable, at best. As such, the decision was made to apply resources and staff to other areas with greater long-term potential.

*Will this change delay when I get paid for stories that have been published?*
No.

*What is the copyright status of stories that have appeared in Scrye?*
F+W retains those rights.

*Will you have work for me in the future?*
While it is possible that we may produce games-focused special magazine, book, or digital projects in the future, nothing is currently scheduled. F+W continues to publish a wide range of publications for collectors and hobbyists, so there may be opportunities available for you, depending on your other interests.

*I like writing for F+W. What are some of your other publications?*
Please visit us on the Web at www.fwpublications.com.

*How can I keep in touch with you?*
I am still employed at F+W, now working on the editorial staff of Goldmine, our bi-weekly magazine for record collectors and music enthusiasts. You can continue to reach me at joyce.greenholdt@fwmedia.com or (715) 445-4612 ext.13419.

According to Wikipedia, Scrye has been produced since 1993, two years before InQuest first appeared. It's death marks the passing of the last major Magic publication."

Well, for me that's sad news indeed...

I know many people didn't like Scrye, but as an overall gaming industry magazine they were great. I loved reading about what was coming out and their gaming company updates. In addition, there was the nostalgia, as they've been there since I was first getting into Magic (still have my copies of Scrye #1 & 2). The price guide wasn't good, but the rest of the magazine was solid.

I guess I'm in the minority, but it does make me sad :'-(

Take it easy,
Jared

I think I started reading Scrye at issue #4. The prices were actually pretty accurate for the area I lived in up until around 1995 when everything changed and Scrye didn't. I stopped buying it shortly after. I can't say I'm sad to hear this news, but it does make me think about the good old days.
