Alpha/Beta sealed event
A friend of mine asked me to post this here in case there are enough people to actually make it happen. If it does, I will sure be there to watch. Replies can be made in this thread or if you want a personal contact please PM me and I'll give you his email address.
Hi Gary,
I'm already counting down the weeks to Gencon and the fact that it's the 20th anniversary for Magic only makes it more exciting. I was wondering if you could help me put something together at Gencon this year. I'm interested in celebrating and being part of an Alpha/Beta sealed event. I envision people bringing/buying a starter (and perhaps a booster) cracking them, shuffling, and playing. No real deck construction, more for the nostalgia of how it used to be. There doesn't even have to be an entry fee or prize but we could do that if it's what people want. I know we could get a big crowd to watch the event and I'm sure word would spread fast. The challenge will be getting 4-8 people to be part of the event. I know you are a big part of the Librarities community and figured it would be a good place to try to enlist some participants. I could get an additional 1-2 guys to join. Let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Nick

Well ... it is rather unlikely but ...Tristal wrote:I feel degenerate for even thinking about this since I'll be attending Gencon, but cracking A/B product is basically never worth the cost, right?

I hope there's an implicit "sleeve the cards" before the shuffling step.mystical_tutor wrote: I envision people bringing/buying a starter (and perhaps a booster) cracking them, shuffling, and playing.

Is there enough sealed product to make this happen?
I have been on the look out for sealed Alpha Boosters and Starters for a while now and unless someone is sitting on a box for just such an occassion it might be tricky to pull it off.
Not to mention how unbalanced the game would be, one guy pulls a lotus and the other gets an Island or something crazy!
Stick to Revised, plenty of that around though the prices are going up.
I hope it happens though I would be sad to see Alpha Boosters getting cracked before I can squirrel them away into my album :)

As much as I'll love discovering an ABU Draft, as a Booster Collector I'll also feel like something is dying as those boosters become open...

I would love to participate in this event, but I feel really really bad about opening Alpha/Beta sealed product these days. Even while I contemplate starting a BGS Alpha set I still don't think I could bring myself to open an Alpha starter. I would also need to con my wife into going to Gencon with me because this falls on her birthday this year.
BGS 9+ Alpha set 282/295 (97.29%) Avg 9.41
BGS 9.5+ Beta set 283/302 (93.71%) Avg 9.58
BGS 9.5+ Arabian set 35/92 (38.04%) Avg 9.62
BGS 9.5+ Antiquities set 82/100 (82%) Avg 9.64
BGS 9.5+ Legends set 279/310 (90.00%) Avg 9.61
BGS 9.5+ Beta set 283/302 (93.71%) Avg 9.58
BGS 9.5+ Arabian set 35/92 (38.04%) Avg 9.62
BGS 9.5+ Antiquities set 82/100 (82%) Avg 9.64
BGS 9.5+ Legends set 279/310 (90.00%) Avg 9.61

It would be sad to crack a Thoughlace and then think how much the booster would have been if it was still sealed.
Probably just as sad to to sell a Black Lotus in a sealed pack but at least you would never know!
Still I guess that is half the fun of MtG! I am not sure I would even bother to crack Revised, way too many disappointments back when it was released.
