Old School 93/94 Magic & the Library of Dominia
Hello all,
Hope this finds you well. In the last two weeks my play group has been trying out a new, old 'format' that was what some/most of you may remember cutting your teeth on back in the day.
Here is the format in all its glory:
http://oldschool-mtg.blogspot.com/p/historik.html
It is awesome, fun, historic and nostalgic. Might I suggest you give it a try. The purists who own the site use only English Alpha, Beta and Unlimited for the base sets and eschew foreign but we use anything(foreign, revised, proxy etc.) just to play the 'format.' I had to pick up Chronicles City of Brass and a bunch of Fellwar Stones just for a second deck that needed them: so you get the gist- practicality to play the format trumps the bling factor for my player mode so you can let it be that way for you if you'd like to also.
While perusing the lists of decks from their events, I recalled a site from the mid-90's called The Library of Dominia; it was a site wherein people would submit their decklists and you could search their decklists by any number of a specific card or combination of cards. Some decks were crap, but others actually had merit so you had to mine the lists from your query for decks that were buildable and playable.
In the early days of the wild wild west of Magic, I really enjoyed playing wacky cards in my decks for multiplayer and would often use this site to find decks with other people's lists that contained the cards. For example- I had a 4x Elkin Lair deck, a Land Equilibrium deck, a Bazaar of Wonders deck, etc. Itried looking up the site to see if it was archived and it is nowhere to be found. It definitely gave some time to cards that were outliers to the tournament scene and I really enjoyed perusing decks.
Does anyone else remember this site from the mid 90's? Does anyone know if it archived anywhere on the modern interwebs?
Please let me know.
Thanks,
Matt

IMO the 93/94 format should forbid sleeves. That's how we rolled in the old days.

The Library of Dominia was at http://www.tranquility.com/magic/. The link is dead, but poke around the Archive.org versions at https://web.archive.org/web/*/tranquility.com/magic/ and maybe you'll find what you're looking for.

True Ironman Magic...shuffling away value with every riffle shuffle of the cards.Archivist wrote:IMO the 93/94 format should forbid sleeves. That's how we rolled in the old days.

Don't think my stomach can handle it nowadays knowing the value of some of the cards.
Thanks for the link- I'll check it out.

And ripping up your chaos orb into confetti and sprinkling it on your opponents cards :)
We used to play our cards balanced on the edge of the table so if any other card hit them they would fall off. Fortunately there was only one chaos orb in the playgroup and it got traded away quickly enough.

Poor 'Old Drooly!' Don't rip him up!!
As for a neato replacement for the Library of Dominia, I found this:
http://www.mtgvault.com/decks/search/
You can search by card name and all decks with that card will show up.

I really like the 93/94 format except for the purist attitude. I really think that later reprints of old cards should be legal.
I enjoy playing without sleeves, but I wouldn't make it a requirement. I'm a little concerned that this format will put a lot more play wear on some hard to find cards if it gains in popularity.
I don't recommend ripping up a Chaos Orb (or Falling Star). I played an evening that way, and it was simply to overpowered. Resulting house rule, cards must remain in one piece.
For deck ideas (and some interesting history!) you might check out Eternal Central's Schools of Magic History of Vintage series.

Re: Old School 93/94 Magic & the Library of Dominia
Our play group allows any version of a card as well as proxies; if not it wouldn't be a 'group' at all- just me with the originals. Personally, I'm all about 'the more the merrier' so I actually make proxies for people so they can play this.
As for raw dogging cards and ripping up $100.00+ bills... momma didn't raise no dummy...Sleeve use ALWAYS and my Old Drooly will be intact for eternity.
