Organ Grinder's picture
So, been a long time since i posted here, but i have been reading a little now and then.
well i was looking throug a bunch of my chinese Torment searching for 4 deep analysis and i see Organ Grinder and think maby this art could have been alted.
sitting right by the comp looking up the card on wizards.com is faster this is what i get:
YAY!! another AA to the collection! ..or is it?
could remember the bones and stuff so i got the irl card anyway and nope(!) non of my griders look like that!
Isnt that odd? wizards have art online that was not used on the cards?
anyone know anything of this?
cheers,
Peter ax

Re: Organ Grinder's picture
To the best of my knowledge, the card shown by the WotC autocard window does not exist. My assumption is that it shows the original art drawn by the artist and not the modified version used for the card, and WotC maybe changed the actual card look after they had created their autocard window images and forgot to adjust the change.

Re: Organ Grinder's picture
Ralph is correct (as usual ;)). That art never saw print. Here is an old Ask Wizards from December 2002 that explains it:
Q: "My friends and I noticed a weird thing on Bob Flaminio's Magic website regarding Torment's Organ Grinder (http://www.flaminio.com/temp/organ-grinder.htm). Some pictures used on the web and in magazines were different than the actual card. One has cool hanging skeletons, the other doesn't. Reminds me of the old Unholy Strength with and without the pentagram. Care to explain?"
--Seb, Holland
A: From Jeremy Cranford, Magic art director:
"We decided to alter the Organ Grinder art in 'post' for two reasons. The main reason is that we sell our product in China and they have requested that we do not show skeletons in our art. It is considered very disrespectful to show human skeletons in their culture. The second reason is that the Brand team has made a decision to keep Magic: The Gathering at a PG-13 gore level and some thought that all the hanging skeletons crossed the line. The art team really tries it's best to keep the card art as close to the originals as possible but sometimes things have to be altered when the Brand team feels that artist has crossed a line.
"The change was made so late that some media (including our own web team) had received the unaltered art already, and it showed up in various places."
